Every sports fan has, at one time or another, blamed themselves for a loss by the favorite team. “The Mets lost because I went to the bathroom” or “I sneezed and the Mets blew the lead,” are common phrases in New York this time of year. We all like to think that we have some mystical connection with our favorite teams. Hell, the Mets lost the last six games I attended, so maybe I’m bad luck!
But one loyal Mets fan and Wright Stache reader is so worried about her bad mojo that she’s scared to purchase an official The Wright Stache t-shirt for fear that it will cause David Wright to get hurt! She wrote to us seeking our input before buying this fine piece of apparel (that we recommend you all purchase).
We at The Wright Stache believe that our positive energy, stache-powered karma and cosmic spirit can break any curse. In fact, we believe that purchasing a Wright Stache t-shirt is just the thing that every Mets fan needs to do to inspire David to grow a stache and lead the Mets to the World Series. But we decided to let you all weigh in on the matter. After the jump is the letter we received and a poll that demands your attention.
Dear The Wright Stache,
I am incredibly interested in purchasing one of the wright stache’s tee-shirts but I have a Jersey Curse that has prevented me from buying mets shirts. Whenever I buy or someone gives me a mets teeshirt jersey the player either gets traded or injured within the year…It all started when I was given a Mike Hampton jersey. Since then I have had Roberto Alomar, Shinjo, Edgardo Alfonzo, Rey Ordonez, and Cliff Floyd(I feel like I am forgetting some others but you get the point).
I figured it was probably just a mets curse so I tried getting a Boston Red Sox jersey…In the fall of 2004 I bought a Johnny Damon jersey, December of 2005 he gets traded to the yankees. My most recent purchase was a New York Giants Osi Umenyioria jersey…I thought for sure it was just a baseball curse, not football also. A few months later he was injured in a preseason game and missed the entire 2008 season after having knee surgery.
A few years ago my family agreed that I would not be allowed to get either a David Wright or Jose Reyes Jersey. I think The Wright Stache is a great idea and am a big supporter of the cause and would love to show my support at games. However, I am scared that the tee-shirt looks too much like a david wright jersey. It has been a debate within my house for the past few months now whether or not i should get one. I was just wondering if you had any opinion. Every single tee-shirt/jersey i have purchased/been given has resulted in the player being injured or traded. Do you think it would be safe for me to get one or not worth the risk? I appreciate and value your input.
Lets go mets!

I can’t change my vote now, but leave it in all y’all’s hands. Wright’s bomb last night might be a sign, maybe Ali’s Karma is coming around…

It seems to me that your safest bet would be to not buy a shirt. Perhaps if you Bedazzle the shirt, the Mets-glory that resides within your soul will shine through and usurp the curse.

I’m going to have to agree with M. Jeanski. The safest bet would in fact be to not buy a shirt right now. Maybe buy the shirt for someone else so that you can take the glory when they get complimented, but should something go wrong, you can’t be blamed. (You weren’t wearing the shirt after all.)

Bottom line: If you love Wright’s shit (aka stache), than buy his shirt.

The important thing to remember about jersey karma is that it’s not set by any one person. Your disasters are an incredible coincidence, but not one that suggests a personal curse.
Like the example you gave with Johnny Damon. You didn’t buy a Ruth jersey in 1920, did you? How about a Clemens jersey? Now, had you not bought the jersey, would Johnny Damon still have gone over to the dark side? Yes.
The key to avoiding a bad jersey to stick with a clear winner.
All of the situations you described above were fliers: guys at the end of contracts, guys too new to the league to be sure-fire stars, etc.
David Wright is signed to the Mets long-term. He has repeatedly put up MVP-esque performances in successive major league seasons with the Mets. And you know for a fact that David Wright with a Metstache would win the Mets a championship. So you’re in the clear.
If you are still concerned that this will have some sort of jersey effect, I recommend you cut out the “5″ on the back (but not the mustache) and wear this t-shirt over a second t-shirt.
If you do buy this shirt, and Wright gets injured, and your “curse” is proven to be even stronger than the awesome power of this t-shirt, then I will personally buy you a Derek Jeter shirt.
