We Say Thee Yea, Wood Bats of the GSL
by Misopogon | May 8th, 2009Ed note below.
The city of Columbus, Georgia, isn’t well known around the country. Simply by nature of sharing a name with the home of the Yankees’ top farm club, the place d’origine of George Steinbrenner, the nursery of Christian Rock music and the birthplace the Bush political dynasty, they are entitled to all sorts of ridicule.

The wood makes us want to sport stache.
So it was nice to hear this morning that, for once, something good was coming out of Columbus.
If you hadn’t heard already (we hadn’t), there’s an amateur, wood-bat summer baseball league called the Great South League, which lets college ballplayers hone their skills and get used to swinging lumber rather than aluminum. This year, Columbus will join the league, introducing their new team, the Wood Bats. That’s great news, but this in particular caught our attention:
Also unveiled Thursday was the team’s logo, which features a cartoon baseball bat wearing an old-fashioned baseball cap and sporting a handlebar mustache. According to Callaway, the features were chosen because they were iconic to baseball in the 1920s, when Golden Park was first built.
What an excellent, excellent logo. Perfect expression. Perfect handlebar mustache. And — get this — it’s a baseball bat holding a baseball bat!
Now, such a brilliant concept could not have come from nowhere.
The Wright Stache is just guessing here, but further investigation shows the idea of a baseball bat with a perfect handlebar might have had an initial inspiration after all. According to exclusive reports, the following photo was taken this past summer in Athens, Ga., and shows Jose’s Pin Pubes at the wedding of a Columbus native:

The resemblance is too uncanny to be simple accident.
The Wright Stache is thus proud to be the (un)official mascots of Columbus’ new amateur team — and all of the mustaches they are sure to generate among players and fans.
This is taking the well-known and well-shown axiom that ‘naked lips don’t win championships’ and embracing it to a whole new level. We say thee yea, handlebar mustache-sporting baseball bat logo. And we say thee yea, Columbus Wood Bats, ye future champions of the Great South League!
Ed note: This article, as first published, wrongly portrayed the Woodbats as hailing from Columbus, Ohio. The team is based in Columbus, Georgia. This has been corrected, and the article re-written slightly to reflect that. We apologize to those who read the initial edit, and to the 189,000-odd residents of the great town (including, in particular, the lovely bride whose wedding photo we used for the post). However, the initial purpose of the post — to demonstrate the striking resemblance between Jose’s Pin Pubes and the Wood Bats’ logo — is fortunately unaffected.
